Science Olympics

Each Spring, UTeach Outreach hosts Science Olympics in local schools to help students prepare for the fifth grade Science Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills test. The Olympics help students build confidence and increase their interest in science. To prepare for the Olympics, UTeach Outreach students present three review science lessons before the event to encourage the fifth graders to apply their knowledge in a hands-on science competition. This gives students personal experience with content essential to science tests and future classes. For a look at the Science Olympics, please see the video below. Science Olympics
Last year’s Science Olympics combined over 100 volunteers and 57 classrooms in an effort to help an average of 1,425 Austin fifth grade students gear up for the Science TAKS test. Classroom feedback regarding Science Olympics has been overwhelmingly positive and teachers enjoy the opportunity to participate in the program year after year. In spring 2011, KXAN joined us for one of our competitions, praising UTeach's ability to motivate students and encourage college readiness.
